This ingredient is typically found in detergents that claim to brighten white clothes. These are chemicals that actually remain on the clothes to absorb UV light thus minimizing yellow. There are also some environmental safety concerns regarding it and are potentially toxic. Choose a product that is labeled as biodegradable, as it won’t typically contain optical brighteners.

 

7. Phosphates
