Avoid these dishwashing mistakes the next time you are cleaning up

This is an everyday scenario for most people. Hand washing dishes is still a chore for those who don’t own a dishwasher. One of the most sanitary ways to wash dishes by hand is to spruce up your sink – the place where dishes get washed. Also, you need to follow a proper order for washing dishes by hand.
Doing the dishes tends to be one of the most dreaded tasks. Hence, one tends to rush through it and allow room for mistakes. These mistakes can be relatively harmless, but soon germs could spread to make your dishes dirtier and unclean. Read on to know more.
1.Letting Dishes Pile Up
Most of us have been guilty of letting the dishes pile up one time or another. This is a breeding ground for bacteria and harmful germs. Keep in mind that bacteria can stay alive for up to four days on your used dishes. This can spread to other kitchen surfaces. Not to mention, the crusted-on cheese makes the whole washing process more difficult. You need to follow the proper order for washing dishes by hand. If you really don’t want to clean as you go, at least rinse it once and place it where any spare germs will be contained.
2.Using Too Much (bulk) Dishwashing Liquid
One of the most sanitary ways to wash dishes by hand is to soak it in a warm dishwashing solution and then rinse it. Have you ever pulled a utensil out of your kitchen cabinet and it looked cloudy and white? Check your soap usage as you could be using too much detergent. This can leave a sticky residue on your dishes, so stick to a safe amount of liquid detergent if you are washing by hand.
3.Drying With a Dirty or Used Towel
Letting your dishes air-dry after washing is the best way to clean and get rid of those pesky germs. That towel that has been hanging by the sink from forever is not a good choice to drying your dishes, as it is and will be a breeding ground for bacteria. You can either let your dishes air dry or be sure to swap out towels frequently.
If sterilizing your dishes is on your agenda, then the perfect temperature is about 50 to 60 degree Celsius. But your hands won’t be able to tolerate such a high temperature. Your best bet would be to use lukewarm water, which will effectively lather up the detergent liquid as well. It wouldn’t kill bacteria but displace the germs effectively. If you want to sterilize certain dishes, you can do so by keeping it submerged in hot water for 5 minutes.
5.Washing Your Dishes With a Sponge
Kitchen sponges harbor harmful bacteria and germs. In fact, they may even be the dirtiest thing in your house, second only to your toilet! Kitchen hygiene and sanitation is the need of the hour. Instead, opt for a dishwashing brush which can be cleaned and dried completely after each use. If you absolutely must use a sponge, at least change it weekly and keep in clean in between by boiling it in water.
